Sleeping Soundly at an Arms Reach – Moses Baskets
First off, we are pretty decidedly against co-sleeping, that is having your baby sleep in your bed with you. We’ve done it on occasion when there was no other choice, such as if we were staying somewhere with no bed for Eden, but did not enjoy it. Also, I don’t want to get used to it (it IS nice cuddling up to a sweet smelling loving baby), and I don’t want the baby to get used to it. No need to try to convince me of the benefits – it’s just not our thing.
That said, I would like our baby to sleep right next to my bed in the beginning. I really do want to give nursing a good try again this time around, and I think middle-of-the-night feedings will be easier if she’s right there. We did this with Eden for her first few weeks, and I would change only one thing – have the baby level with my bed, or as close as possible to it. With Eden, we just used the bassinet that came with our stroller and put it on the floor. I guess I want to do better with this baby…..Also, post-C-section, it will be easier not to have to bend over to the floor. Not that I’m planning a C, but as a VBAC, the reality is that it’s possible.
Ben thinks we can just put the stroller bassinet on top of a cardboard box. I have a great deal of respect for most of Ben’s ideas, especially about cost savings, but I put my foot down on this one.
Ideally, I’d love to get the Arms-Reach Universal Co-Sleeper, but it’s a bit pricey for just a few weeks use. And the baby is not staying in our room for months really, she’s got her own crib and room for a reason. Also, it doesn’t fit in our room. Its actually 2 inches too wide for the space between my bed and the wall. So, a Moses basket and stand is really a much better choice. It fits perfectly, is portable, similar to the stroller bassinet, and the stand folds up to store easily for the next baby.
Mama’s and Papa’s (that’s us!!) is a British company that makes these beautiful pieces, in all sorts of fun designs, and advertises that they are approved by British safety standards (which not all do). This one happens to be on sale, but unfortunately they only take British credit cards. Amazon.co.uk has them too, albeit not on sale, and not with their safety-standard approved stand, which is pretty important to me. Maybe we could have it built?
Or better yet – can we buy these things in Israel? It does seem like just the thing for the Israeli all natural market, but I haven’t seen them yet…
you can rent a bassinet from yad sara i think, and shilav rent out those smaller israeli cribs that might fit by your bed, and the level of the baby can be raised up. also worth asking on modiin list, i’m sure lots of brits have the mamas and papas style on and would be happy to lend it/rent it out
Thanks! Asked on the modiin list, would love to buy it used from a Brit expat. A friend also suggested that the Moses basket stands also hold the stroller bassinets, so we might try that too.
Dad (Ben’s dad) says he thinks a cardboard box is a great idea.
I have a Moses Basket and don’t use a stand- I just have the basket right next to me in the bed. It works out very well for me. Lilah (6 days old) wakes up every 3 hours, I nurse her, put her back in the basket, and back to sleep we both go. I paid $30 for the Moses Basket at Home Goods (only in the US), but I’m sure you can also find them online for cheap.
I'd lend you my Arm's Reach if it'd fit in your room…
I think more likely the arms reach wont fit on the bed – israeli beds are lower down than american beds.
probably we will rent something from shilav….
