Baby Things You Want: For Baby Number 2!

When I first started writing for this blog we had one little boy, and I was blogging about products such as high chairs and single strollers, the essentials for a first baby, as well as the various types of baby paraphernalia I coveted, but couldn’t quite bring myself to buy. You Want This Book! Fast forward to the present, and our little family has expanded to four of us, with the addition of our little girl back in the summer. She’s now six months old, and the sleep deprivation is easing up (thanks to the book, Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child, known in our house as Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Mummy) so it’s time for me to get back to blogging, and answer the question you are all asking: What baby products do I need for baby number 2? Graco Pack ‘n Play Well firstly, it’s important to remember that many, if not most of your initial baby gear purchases can be reused for number 2. So that’s the cot, highchair and baby sleeping bags sorted then. What I do recommend, if you’ve not got one already, is a pack and play. If your first one is still in a

Kids’ Best Friend

I highly highly highly recommend you get your kids a dog. I think every child should grow up with a dog. I only had one till I was about two years old. I don’t really remember her but I see in photographs and old home movies how happy I was to have her around. We got Coby about a year and a half before Eliana was born. He’s a mixed breed. Part German Shepherd, part kitten, we always say. We’re not sure he realizes he’s a dog. If I sit on the floor he tries to curl up in my lap. He has no idea he weighs almost as much as I do. He’d sleep all day in a patch of sunlight by the window if you’d let him. Before I had kids, I had a baby visiting at my house one day. The baby was napping on my bed, and when he started to cry, Coby charged at me and started barking (Coby NEVER barks) as if to say “The baby’s crying! Do something!” Coby is the gentlest creature. He lets the kids climb all over him and use him as a pillow or a couch. One rainy day

Especially for Baby brand bowls and plates

Especially for Baby brand bowls and plates (sold exclusively in Babies-R-Us stores) are the best ones I have ever come across. They are BPA-free, microwave- and dishwasher-safe, and reasonably-priced. They come with lids (great way to store leftovers or pack a lunch in advance!) and also have removable suctions for the bottoms. This is particularly helpful for toddlers learning to feed themselves. The suction helps the plate and bowl stay in place, preventing spills (or tantrum-induced throwing). Bon Appétit! Batsheva is a mom to two daughters ages four and almost two. In addition to reading her reviews on Baby Things, you can read about her mommy adventures at Late Night Feedings.

A Good Night’s Sleep for Everyone with Ocean Wonders Aquarium

When my daughter was born, we got the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium as a gift. I say “we” because it was as much a gift for my husband and me (OK, me. He can sleep through anything) as it was for Eliana. As a baby, she loved to watch the toy fish and listen to the soothing music. When she got older and I was sleep-training her, I would turn it on to keep her company until she fell asleep. The music, glowing lights and bubbles (which you can choose in several different combinations – music; lights and bubbles/ocean sounds; all three – last for 7 minutes in this version, although on mine (many, many years old since it was a hand-me-down and we received it 4.5 years ago) it lasts for 18. At first I had to go back in and turn it back on if Eliana hadn’t fallen asleep after 18 minutes, but eventually she learned to do it herself. It also has a couple of knobs and switches to make the fish move, if your child needs something to do before dozing off. Eliana would turn on her aquarium if she woke up in the middle

Baby Music I Love: Sesame Street, Rafi, Uncle Moishy and Shlock Rock

I’ve never been a very musical person. I like to draw, I like to read, I like to write. I can barely carry a tune. If I had it my way it would be quiet all the time. I never turn on the radio or music to keep me company. But I make an effort to expose my kids to music. Just because it’s not my thing doesn’t mean it can’t be theirs. I have to admit, though, that after buying some great CDs for them, I need some help remembering to turn them on! Remember those big, round, flat black things? I think they were called records. Well, I have this vague recollection of songs coming out of them. Great songs. Songs by my some of my favorite artists. Like Ernie, Cookie Monster, and Oscar. So I Googled it, and whadya know, they made that awesome record into a CD that our kids can listen to. Sesame Street Platinum All-Time Favorites ($10.99) has all the classics, from “Rubber Duckie,” “C is for Cookie,” and “I Love Trash” to “The People in Your Neighborhood,” “Fuzzy and Blue,” and “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” This was the first CD I bought

Small on Space, Big on Fun

One day when I was filling my car with gas, I saw a sign at the gas station that they were selling “ball tents” (like a ball pit in a tent). I didn’t know if the 50 balls it came with would make a big enough ball pit, but supplementary packages of balls are available in quantities of 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400 and even 1000 balls. I thought the whole thing was a cool idea, but a terrible idea at the same time because the balls would be all over the house after approximately 30 seconds of play, and I’d spend the rest of my life collecting them and putting them away. At the park one afternoon, someone set up a princess castle tent, which entranced all the neighborhood children and had them swarming over to play in it. These tents come in lots of other styles too, such as pirate-themed, animal barn, circus tent, spaceship, fire station, and many of your kids’ favorite cartoon characters. I thought it was adorable but not the kind of thing I’d ever splurge on. Then I was at my friends’ house for lunch one day and they had a little pop-up

Stroller Consoles

I love my Phil & Ted’s Stroller with Doubles Kit. It has decent storage when used a single stroller and great storage when the Doubles Kit is attached and there’s only one kid in it (the second seat holds lots of stuff). But when two kids are in it, storage is a problem. What’s possibly even more useful than my Stroll’r Swivel’rs is a handlebar console. I bought this one, which is currently selling for $21.99, four years ago when I got my stroller, and I’ve never looked back. It attaches easily by wrapping velcro straps around the handlebar. It has two cup holders, which I use for sippy cups, water bottles, bags of snacks, flowers my daughter picks on the way home from school, and other miscellany, plus a zipper pocket for valuables. The only problem is sometimes I carry a child up the four flights to my apartment and then realize I’ve left my keys and/or phone and/or wallet in the console. But I guess that can happen with any stroller. Oh, and it could probably use a washing after four years, but I don’t want to remove it and have to be without it! You can get
